Opening the school year in my World Language Class #NATIONALBACKTOSCHOOLPREPDAY

What do I do for the first few days of school?

  • The first day of school is an abbreviated schedule, just long enough to meet the students/take attendance, introduce myself  and talk about urgent matters such as not needing any special supplies for my class, talk about the norms for technology usage in class and have some brief Calendar Time. Yes, even in an abbreviated class period  I feel it is important to set the tone that using the language is of utmost importance. On a normal day, we do Calendar Time and eventually try to hit all the topics listed in the checklist below.

Every day thereafter, we will follow the Daily Framework from *CI Liftoff.* The numbers in the graphic correspond to the ideal number of minutes given the length of class periods. The only thing I need to plan for is what will be the Guided Oral Input and the occasional assessment.

  • On day 2 the guided oral input is "About the teacher"

  • On day 3 the guided oral input is  "About our class"

  • On day 4 I do a lesson about Second Language Acquisition. This is always done in English and I have found is necessary to address each school year.

  • On day 5 and sometimes day 6 the students create a project demonstrating their learning. You can see some exemplars in this Wakelet Collection.

Is there something new I'm adding this year?

You knew the answer was YES, didn't you? 😉

☝I want to intentionally add a music video once a week rather than just doing music for March Music Madness.

✌I'm going to use this or that as well as would you rather prompts as part of our brain breaks and bellringers. I have 2 sets of this or that slideshows in my TPT store and plan on making more bellringer sets this year.

💥Dr. Diane Neubauer(you can follow her on Twitter & YouTube) generously shared a google slide show with 20 quotes about language acquisition to discuss with students. These prompts will be a great supplement to remind students why we're doing things in class the way I do them. She has granted permission to share it with you. Whether you're a new or "seasoned" teacher, remember to walk in and welcome them all with a smile. Comment below what is something you will do in the 1st week of school!
