Shift to Marzano, the Common Core, Interactive Notebooks in the WL Class
Here in the "garden" state, the teacher evaluation system is changing. Apparently there are several models for approaching the new evaluation requirements. My district has chosen to follow the Marzano Evaluation Model. We each received a copy of his book "The art and science of Teaching" and a thick binder with lots of reading for us to digest in anticipation of September 2013.
Our state has also decided to jump onto the Common Core wagon.
One of our activities was to restate the Common Core Standards(since I teach World Language, my only choice was the ones for Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects) in my own words.
1. Cite textual evidence
2. Summarize
3. Follow multi-step procedures and summarize
4. Determine meanings
5. Analyze text structure
6. Analyze author's purpose
7. Text to graphic
8. Assess supports
9. Synthesize information
10. Read and understand.
So, as I always do when presented with something new, I went to pinterest and google to find what is going on and how other teachers are faring.
There are many opinions all over the map about CCS. The most relevant for me are
ACTFL's stance on the Common Core.
v.
Dr. Stephen's Krashen's stance.
Regardless of my opinion, I have to follow the rules.
To begin my preparation I've already downloaded and printed these great Marzano questions cards for high school by Stacy of the Thirtysomething and fabulous blog.
I'm thinking about having students graph their progress and requiring interactive notebook as a requirement for the college prep level students.
Here are some places I've visited lately:
